DON – I believe that it’s important to be a good neighbor. At its simplest, that means being friendly, kind, and considerate to those in your community, whether human or non-human. Considering there are approximately 90 million dogs and 134 million households in the US, the odds of you having a neighbor with a dog are high. Whether you love dogs or dislike them, it is essential that we all get along and be neighborly. Both pet guardians and those without dogs have certain responsibilities, which I will outline after the break.

DON – Responsible pet guardians will: keep their dogs on a leash whenever they are off their property, seek professional help for their dog when other dogs and people make their dog uncomfortable, teach their dog how to be well-mannered around other people and animals, and when off their property ALWAYS pick up their dog’s feces and dispose of it properly. Those of you without dogs will ALWAYS ask before approaching someone with a dog and before setting off fireworks in your neighborhood. All of us need to treat a dog just as we would treat a 2-and-a-half-year-old human toddler, because that’s what they are cognitively and emotionally equivalent to.
