MIKE DOW: – Welcome to Woof Meow with Don Hanson here on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to teach them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor, and online at ForceFreePets.com.
DON: – October is traditionally the month we think about fire safety. However, all of us have heard about fires where people and pets are seriously injured or killed, so really, fire safety must ALWAYS be on our mind. Approximately 80% of all fires occur in private homes; therefore, if your pet encounters a fire, it is most likely to be in your home. We often leave pets alone in our homes, and they typically cannot rescue themselves. Nearly 1,000 fires a year are started by family pets. Typically, you only have about 2 to 5 minutes to escape a fire. That’s very little time to get yourself out, much less your pets. After the break, I’ll discuss things you can do to protect your family, pets included, from fire.
MIKE DOW: – Since 1995, Don has owned Green Acres Kennel Shop at 1653 Union Street in Bangor, offering pet food and supplies, boarding, daycare, and grooming. Learn more at. greenacreskennel.com. Don also offers education for pets and their people at forcefreepets.com.
DON: – Please install smoke and fire alarms in your home. Monitored alarms that automatically call the fire department offer the best protection. Put a sticker on all entrances to your home indicating pets are present. Install fire extinguishers in your home and ensure everyone knows how to use them. Develop a family fire plan and practice your plan at least twice a year. The plan should include two ways to exit every room, where you will meet once you get outside, how to call 9-1-1, how to Stop, Drop & Roll if on fire, and which adults will be responsible for the pets. For more information on protecting your pets from the danger of fire, please read my blog at forcefreepets.com.
MIKE DOW: – Animal lovers listen for Woof Meow with Don Hanson each Monday at 4:20, and at various times during the week, only on Star 977
