MIKE DOW: – This is Woof Meow with Don Hanson on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to train them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop and ForceFreePets.com, at 1653 Union Street in Bangor.

DON: November and December can be joyous, yet chaotic and hectic. We can look forward to several major holidays, each of which can mean more activities at school for the kids and a higher chance of guests in our home. We also spend more time away from home attending school concerts, company parties, and family gatherings. Some people thrive on a flurry of activity, and some long for a calmer time of year. Our pets, especially dogs and cats, tend to prefer predictability and routine. After the break, I’ll share a few tips to make the holidays easier for you and your pets.

MIKE DOW: – For 31 years, Don has been owner and operator of Green Acres Kennel Shop, 1653 Union Street in Bangor, offering pet supplies, boarding, grooming, and training. Learn more at greenacreskennel.com and forcefreepets.com

DON: As you get all wrapped up in the holidays, please, don’t forget your pet. Make sure to set aside time for them, as they miss you even more when you are not home as much as usual. Spending time with them also helps you relax from the holiday madness. Taking a walk or tossing a ball for your dog or playing with your cat with a wand toy are all excellent year-round activities but can be even better during the holidays. With more people in your home over the holidays, it is essential that you know the signals your pets give to say, “Hey, I’m really not comfortable with all these people,  can I just go somewhere and be someplace by myself.” Remember, your pet ALWAYS gets to choose who they interact with and who they want to avoid. Make sure your guests respect your pet’s wishes.
