MIKE DOW: – This is Woof Meow with Don Hanson on Star 977. When it comes to pets, how to best care for them, how to train them, and how to make that bond with your pet even stronger, do what so many people in Maine do: they go to Don Hanson at Green Acres Kennel Shop and ForceFreePets.com, at 1653 Union Street in Bangor.

DON: Halloween, when people behave strangely, dress in scary costumes, and make obnoxious noises, can be very frightening for most pets. When our pets are afraid, they may run off, get lost, or may even get hurt or sick. The best place for your pet on Halloween is in a comfortable, safe room in your home, far from the front door. Make sure the room has a comfortable place to rest, as well as some of their favorite snacks and toys. If a family member stays in the safe room with your pet, that’s even better. Playing soft music or white noise can also help drown out the chaos at the front door. After the break, I’ll discuss additional ways you can keep your pet safe on Halloween

DON: .Treats are prevalent at Halloween, and if they contain chocolate or the artificial sweetener xylitol, they can be deadly to your pets. Please, keep all candy and treats out of reach of your pets. If you take your children trick-or-treating, I’d strongly encourage you to leave your dog at home, as your dog will be far happier. Dressing your pet in a costume may be fun for you, but it’s very stressful for most pets. If your pet freezes in place or frantically tries to get out of the costume, they are trying to tell you to PLEASE STOP! Other signs of distress include calming signals such as tongue flicks, yawning, and averting eye contact. More intense signals might be barking, nipping, growling, and biting.
