DON HANSON: It’s Spring, a time when people often think about getting a puppy. In fact, I’m often asked, “When should I start training my puppy?” To which I respond, the moment your puppy is capable of learning, which is essentially the instant you bring them home. I then suggest they ask themselves a more important question: When should you start learning to prepare for your new puppy? I encourage people to learn about canine behavior, communication, husbandry, learning, and training before bringing their puppy or new dog home, because your life will become very busy once the puppy is living with you. If you haven’t had a puppy before, or maybe it’s been a while, you will find what we know about puppies and dogs has changed a great deal, and much of what you may have learned in the past may be irrelevant or even counterproductive.
